Frequently Asked Questions
We help you invest with discipline, reduce tax drag, and build a plan you can rely on.
Who Are Your Typical Clients?
Most of our clients have $1.5 million or more in investable assets and have reached a point where a do-it-yourself approach no longer meets the complexity of their financial lives. They usually have multiple account types, concentrated stock positions, are more sensitive to taxes, they may have a business they're planning to sell, or an estate that needs more than a simple will.
- Business Owners and Executives Approaching a Liquidity Event
Clients preparing to sell a business, exercise concentrated equity, or transition out of an executive role, who need a coordinated plan for taxes, reinvestment, and what comes after the transaction — not just investment management after the fact. - Retirees and Near-Retirees Managing Significant Assets
Clients focused on converting a seven-figure portfolio into reliable, tax-efficient income, sequencing withdrawals across account types, and building an estate plan that actually reflects how much they've accumulated. - Families Navigating Wealth Transitions
Clients receiving an inheritance, settling an estate, or restructuring finances after a major life change, who need both technical expertise and a single point of contact who already understands the full picture.
Is There a Minimum to Work With You?
Yes. We generally require a minimum of $1,500,000 to open and maintain an account. This account minimum may be waived for clients who anticipate adding additional funds to the account in the near future. For accounts that do not meet the minimimum size requirement, the annual fee will be set at 1.50% subject to a $10,000 minimum annual fee.
How Do You Work With Clients?
We offer two ways to engage, though most clients in our target range choose the second:
Financial Planning Engagement — A one-time or periodic deep review of your financial strategy, for clients who want expert analysis without ongoing management.
Wealth Management — Ongoing management of your full financial picture: investment management, continuous plan updates, and direct coordination with your CPA, estate attorney, and other professionals so every part of your financial life moves in the same direction. Most of our wealth management clients choose this structure because it allows their investment strategy and financial plan to evolve together as circumstances change.
What Is Your Investment Philosophy?
We don't believe in timing the market. We build globally diversified portfolios engineered around your specific tax situation, concentrated positions, and liquidity needs, and we impose the discipline to stick with the strategy when markets get volatile. For clients with significant assets, this usually means as much attention to tax-efficient structuring and asset location as to the investments themselves. Read More
What Investment Products Do You Use?
We primarily use exchange-traded funds and no-load, institutional-class mutual funds — the same tools used by large institutional investors, at a fraction of the cost of actively managed alternatives. Where it fits your situation, we also use individual securities, direct bonds, and, for qualified clients, alternative or private investment strategies may also be considered where appropriate. How Do You Get Compensated?
We're a fee-only registered investment advisor. We never accept commissions, and we never sell products. Compensation comes in two forms:
- Wealth management clients pay a percentage of assets under management, billed quarterly.
- Financial planning clients pay a fixed or hourly fee based on project complexity.
Why Hire an Advisor at This Level of Wealth?
At $1.5 million or more, the cost of an uncoordinated financial life isn't a missed opportunity — it's a measurable one. A few reasons clients at this stage choose to work with us:
- Your accountant, estate attorney, and previous advisor aren't talking to each other, and things are getting missed.
- You're facing a major decision — a business sale, a concentrated stock position, an inheritance — and you need an experienced advisor to guide you through alternatives and ramifications of potential decisions.
- You want your investment strategy actively managed for tax efficiency, not just performance.
- You want one person who understands your entire financial picture, not a different specialist for every question.
- You're ready to delegate the implementation, not just get advice you have to execute yourself.
- You want someone you can call not just for your investments but to also guide you through every day financial decisions that may have a major impact on your long-term financial health.
- Your spouse is not currently involved in the financial planning process and you would like for them to have someone they can call in the event something happens to you.
What Can I Expect as a Client?
You can expect a more personal experience with a team of trusted professionals. You can also expect an advisory relationship built around your financial life—not just your investment portfolio. We take the time to understand your goals, priorities, family circumstances, tax considerations, liquidity needs, and long-term objectives. From there, we develop and maintain a coordinated strategy that brings together investment management and financial planning.
As your circumstances change, we revisit your plan, monitor your portfolio, and help you evaluate important financial decisions as they arise.
You can also expect direct access to experienced advisors, thoughtful communication, and advice that is independent, fee-only, and fiduciary.
